Manufacture Information

Synthesis of phenethyl alcohol:

Method 1:

Add a certain amount of benzene and catalyst into a 500ml four mouth flask. After the system temperature is cooled to about 5 ℃, drop the mixture of benzene and ethylene oxide from a constant pressure dropping funnel, control the dropping speed to maintain a constant reaction temperature. After the dropping, hydrolyze, separate the organic phase, evaporate the benzene under normal pressure, and then distill the product under reduced pressure.

Method 2:

Add 60 milliliters of xylene and metallic sodium dried with anhydrous calcium chloride, along with 21 grams (0.9 mol) of metallic sodium wire, into a 1000 milliliter four necked flask equipped with a mercury sealed stirrer, thermometer, long reflux condenser, and dropper funnel.

Heat the oil bath until all the metallic sodium under the xylene layer melts (sodium melting point is 97.5 ° C), slowly start the stirrer, and disperse the sodium into fine balls.

Take out the oil bath. After cooling to 60 ° C, add 25 grams (0.15m01) of phenylacetylethanol and 150 grams of absolute ethanol as soon as possible, and use a dropping funnel to add the mixture. Then inject 200 grams of absolute ethanol through the upper port of the reflux condenser.

When the reaction is slow, heat in a water bath until the sodium is completely dissolved. Distillation is used to recover ethanol, distillation is used to recover benzene and xylene under reduced pressure, and then the residue in the bottle is diluted with water.

Then extract twice with benzene.

The benzene extract was dried using anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and the benzene was recovered by atmospheric distillation. The benzene was distilled under reduced pressure at a collection temperature of 116-118 ° C/3.3kpa β - phenylethanol.
