Propylene Oxide Emergency Accident Treatment

Feb 07, 2022 Leave a message

Propylene Oxide products are flammable and should be stored in a ventilated, dry, cool place, not exposed to direct sunlight and isolated from fire sources. Propylene oxide in liquid form can cause burns to the skin and cornea. All personnel who come into contact with propylene oxide should wear the prescribed protective equipment. The fire occurred by propylene oxide should be extinguished by special foam liquid. Some accidents will happen when using propylene oxide, you can learn how to deal with them from the following

1. First-aid measures

2. Propylene oxide fire extinguishing method

3. Emergency disposal of propylene oxide leakage

First Aid Measures

Inhalation: Get away from the scene to fresh air quickly. Keep the airway open. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. If breathing stops, give artificial respiration immediately. Seek medical attention.

Ingestion: If Propylene oxide is accidentally ingested, rinse mouth immediately with water, or drink milk or egg white to rinse mouth. Immediately go to the hospital.

Skin contact: Immediately remove clothing contaminated with Propylene oxide and flush the wound with plenty of running water for at least 15 minutes. Go to the hospital immediately.

Eye contact: If eye contact with Propylene oxide occurs, flush with plenty of running water or saline for at least 15 minutes, then go to the hospital immediately.

Propylene oxide extinguishing method

Move the container from the fire to an open area if possible. Keep the Propylene oxide container cool by spraying with water until the fire is extinguished. Propylene oxide containers in the field of fire must be evacuated immediately if they are discoloured or if the sound is generated from the safety relief device.

Extinguishing agents for Propylene oxide: Soluble foam, carbon dioxide, dry powder, sand. Water is not extinguishable.

Emergency disposal of Propylene oxide spill

Eliminate all ignition sources. Delineate the alert area according to the area affected by liquid flow and vapour diffusion, and evacuate relevant personnel to the safety zone from the side and upwind direction. Recommend emergency response personnel to wear air respirators and anti-toxic and anti-static clothing. The equipment used must not be suspended in the air. Do not touch or cross Propylene oxide leaks. Cut off the source of the spill if possible. Prevent spills from entering bodies of water, sewers, basements or confined spaces. Small spills: Absorb with non-combustible materials. Large spills: Construct a dike or dig a pit to contain it. Absorb large amounts of liquid with lime powder. Cover with anti-soluble foam to reduce evaporation. Spraying with water mist reduces evaporation but does not reduce the flammability of the spill in the confined space. Transfer to a tanker or special collector with an explosion-proof pump. Spray aerosol water to disperse vapours and dilute liquid spills.

As an emergency precaution, the spill isolation distance should be at least 50 m. In the case of a large spill, the initial evacuation distance downwind should be at least 300 m.
