Formaldehyde also is called formic aldehyde, and it has many uses in life. The commonly used sheets, paints, carpets, wallpapers, etc. for interior decoration contain and release formaldehyde. Incomplete combustion of fuel and tobacco leaves also releases formaldehyde. In medicine, formaldehyde is also often used as an antiseptic and disinfectant. The main routes of human exposure to formaldehyde are inhalation through the respiratory tract, oral ingestion, and skin contact. So what should we do if there are some accidents about formaldehyde happen?
1. Emergency treatment of leakage
Evacuate personnel from the leaked contaminated area to a safe area; prohibit irrelevant personnel from entering the contaminated area, and cut off the fire source. It is recommended that personnel of emergency treatment wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing. Do not come into direct contact with the leak, and stop the leak when it is safe to do so. Water mist can reduce evaporation but does not allow water to enter the storage container. Mix and absorb with sand or other non-combustible adsorbents, then collect and transport to the waste disposal site for disposal. It can also be rinsed with a large amount of water, and the diluted rinse water can be put into the wastewater system.
2. Protective measures
Respiratory Protection: A gas mask should be worn when exposure to its vapors is possible. Wear self-contained breathing apparatus during emergency rescue or escape.
Eye Protection: Wear chemical safety goggles.
Protective clothing: Wear relevant protective clothing.
Hand Protection: Wear chemical-resistant gloves.
Others: Smoking, eating, and drinking are prohibited at the workplace. After work, wash thoroughly. Pay attention to personal hygiene. Conduct pre-employment and periodic medical examinations. Entering the tank or other high-concentration areas must be supervised.
3. First-aid measures
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing and rinse thoroughly with soap and water. Or rinse with 2% bicarbonate solution.
Eye Contact: Immediately lift eyelids and flush with running water or saline for at least 15 minutes.
Inhalation: Quickly leave the scene to fresh air. Keep the airway open. Provide artificial respiration if necessary, and seek medical attention.
Ingestion: Rinse mouth and gastric lavage immediately when the patient is awake, and seek medical attention.
Extinguishing methods: water mist, foam, carbon dioxide, sand.
