What is propylene oxide?

Nov 26, 2021 Leave a message

Propylene oxide, also known as propylene oxide and methyl ethylene oxide, is a very important raw material for organic compounds and is the third largest propylene derivative after polypropylene and acrylonitrile. Propylene oxide is a colorless ether liquid, low boiling point and flammable. It has chirality, and the industrial product is generally a racemic mixture of two enantiomers. Partly miscible with water, miscible with ethanol and ether. It forms a binary azeotropic mixture with pentane, pentene, cyclopentane, cyclopentene and dichloromethane. Toxic, irritating to mucous membranes and skin, can damage the cornea and conjunctiva, cause respiratory pain, skin burns and swelling, and even tissue necrosis.

Application

The KOH/4A molecular sieve solid catalyst with high activity and stability for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, carbon dioxide and methanol was developed for the first time. The influence of the reaction temperature and the loading of the catalyst active component KOH on the catalyst performance was investigated. Under the optimized experimental conditions, propylene oxide can be completely converted, and the yield of dimethyl carbonate is 168%. From the experimental results, it is inferred that the product dimethyl carbonate is the addition of propylene oxide and carbon dioxide to produce carbonic acid Propylene ester is then produced by the transesterification reaction with methanol. Methanol has a catalytic effect on the synthesis of propylene carbonate from propylene oxide and carbon dioxide.

Propylene oxide is made of polyether polyol; It is mainly used in the production of propylene glycol and various nonionic surfactants. These include polyether polyol, polyurethane foam, insulators; elastomers; It is an important raw material in the manufacture of adhesives and coatings. Ionic surfactants are used in oils; Chemicals Pesticides; Textile industry; It is widely used in daily chemistry and other industries. At the same time, propylene oxide is an important chemical raw material.
