Nitric Acid Oxidation (Traditional Industrial Route)
 

This process uses DMSO as the raw material and concentrated nitric acid as the oxidant. The chemical reaction equation is: (CH3)2SO + 2HNO3 → (CH3)2SO2 + 2NO2↑ + H2O

 

DMSO is heated to 90–100 °C, followed by slow dropwise addition of concentrated nitric acid at a molar ratio of 1:1.88. The reaction temperature is strictly controlled at 140–145 °C to avoid bumping.

 

The reaction releases substantial heat, so a condenser is applied for reflux. The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) tail gas is regenerated with oxygen for recycling.

 

After the reaction completes, the mixture is cooled with ice brine for crystallization, and crude product is obtained by filtration. Purification is conducted via vacuum distillation (138–145 °C / 740 mmHg) or recrystallization, yielding a product purity of 99%.

The mixture undergoes reflux reaction for 3 to 5 hours at a molar ratio of DMSO to H2O2 of 1:1.2–1.5. 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid can be used as a catalyst to achieve a conversion rate of ≥96% and selectivity of ≥99%, which simplifies subsequent purification.

 

Post-reaction treatment includes cooling and crystallization, decolorization with activated carbon, desalination via ion exchange and vacuum drying, producing a final product with purity up to 99.9%.

 

Featuring high safety and low toxicity along with mild product odor, this is currently the dominant production technology.

Microchannel Continuous Flow Synthesis (Advanced Intensified Process)
 

To address the severe exothermic risk of hydrogen peroxide oxidation, a microchannel reactor is adopted. The reaction is performed at a precisely controlled temperature of 120–130 °C with a residence time of 10 minutes.

 

A 50% hydrogen peroxide solution is used at a molar ratio of 1:1.5, achieving full conversion of DMSO. The microchannel reactor enables efficient heat and mass transfer, eliminating local overheating and thermal runaway.

 

It also features low material hold-up and superior safety. Continuous operation shortens production cycles, boosts capacity by over 30%, and delivers a stable product purity of ≥99.5%, making it suitable for large-scale green manufacturing.
