adverse reaction

Ammonium thiocyanate, as an inorganic compound, is widely used in industry, chemical experiments, and specific medical scenarios. However, its powder form may cause multiple toxic reactions through direct contact, inhalation, or ingestion due to its high skin permeability, volatility, and chemical activity.

Skin and mucosal irritation response

Ammonium thiocyanate powder has strong irritant properties and can cause contact dermatitis upon direct contact with the skin, manifested as erythema, itching, and peeling. Long term exposure may lead to skin keratinization or chronic ulcers. For example, workers in a gold purification plant have experienced hand ulcers due to long-term manual operation of ammonium thiocyanate, indicating a risk of chronic skin damage. The mechanism may be related to the disruption of skin barrier function by thiocyanate ions, inducing the release of inflammatory factors. In addition, the powder is prone to adhere to the conjunctiva, causing chemical conjunctivitis, manifested as conjunctival congestion, tearing, and photophobia. It is necessary to immediately rinse with water for more than 15 minutes to reduce damage.

Respiratory toxicity

After inhaling ammonium thiocyanate dust or aerosols, it can irritate the upper respiratory mucosa, causing symptoms such as cough, sore throat, and chest tightness. High concentration exposure may lead to chemical pneumonia, manifested as respiratory distress and pulmonary edema, requiring emergency medical intervention. Occupational exposure studies have shown that workers who inhale ammonium thiocyanate dust for a long time have significantly reduced FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second) in lung function tests, indicating an increased risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Its toxicity mechanism involves oxidative stress response, dust activates alveolar macrophages to release reactive oxygen species (ROS), and damages alveolar epithelial cells and capillary endothelium.

Digestive system damage

Ingestion of ammonium thiocyanate powder can cause acute gastrointestinal reactions, including nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and in severe cases, gastrointestinal bleeding. According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), consuming 3 grams by mistake can cause vomiting and difficulty breathing, while consuming more than 10 grams can be fatal. Its corrosiveness originates from the decomposition of thiocyanate ions into hydrogen sulfide (H ₂ S) and cyanide (CN ⁻) in gastric acid environment, which directly damages the gastrointestinal mucosa. Chronic exposure may lead to gastric mucosal atrophy, intestinal metaplasia, and increased risk of gastric cancer.

Hematological suppression

Ammonium thiocyanate has an inhibitory effect on bone marrow hematopoietic function, and long-term exposure increases the risk of thrombocytopenia by 2-3 times. In severe cases, it can lead to pancytopenia. The mechanism involves the competitive inhibition of key enzymes involved in folate metabolism (such as dihydrofolate reductase) by thiocyanate ions, which interferes with DNA synthesis and leads to impaired production of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Clinical manifestations include anemia, tendency towards infection (such as fever and sore throat), and tendency towards bleeding (such as skin bruising and nosebleeds). In the blood routine test of occupational exposure population, the proportion of white blood cell count below 4 × 10 ⁹/L is significantly higher than that of non exposure group.
